Welding
Only competent staff are allowed to carry out welding and hot work and it must be done in accordance with the welding and hot work procedures set out in the Safety Manual. Managers/supervisors must carry out (or arrange to be carried out) a risk assessment for the work. This can be a general risk assessment covering standard welding/hot work carried out in the workshop but specific assessments may be necessary where the work is of higher risk, particularly when the hot work is to be done outside the workshop as this may present a greater risk and is likely to affect others.

All hot work undertaken outside of the controlled conditions of the workshop and in a closed working environment must be covered by a UCL Hot Work Permit.

Project managers with responsibility for UCL Estates projects, where contractors will be involved in hot working, must reinforce with the principal contractor the requirements of UCL hot work permits
